  Reports from Nakhon Si Thammarat province, on the mainland south of Koh Samui, bring news of a fatal box jellyfish sting that has tragically killed a 13-year old boy. Swimming 10-metres out from Ban Fai Tha Beach with friends, the boy was reportedly struck on the chest, neck and arms by the animal's tentacles and experienced agonizing pain before succumbing to the deadly venom. He died at a local hospital. The incident occurred on the evening of 1 August 2026 where his friends sustained non-fatal stings, as did a first responder.  Thailand media outlet, The Nation, stated that: " A close friend of the victim, who was injured by jellyfish venom while trying to help him, recalled that the boy had cried out for help after being exposed to the venom.  The friend ran over and saw about three or four jellyfish surrounding the boy.  The victim then fainted and lost consciousness.  The friend ran to seek help from an ambulance standing by at an event, before the boy w...

  Blakang mati, or behind death, is the original Malay name for Singapore's Sentosa Island, and now the rather ominous new name for a recently discovered species of deadly Chironex box jellyfish. Singapore's first, t he planet's fourth. Blakangmati ,  joins the can-kill list of extremely dangerous Chironex species, ranging from tropical Australia's infamous Fleckerii and the Japan-Philippines' region's Yamaguchii , to the relative newcomer Indrasaksajiae , that calls  Thailand and surrounding areas, including Singapore, home. Researchers at Tohoku University and the National University of Singapore  determined through m orphological analysis that it is genetically different to  Yamaguchii, and it also has a slight anatomical difference, making it a completely new species that packs the same punch as its Chironex cousins.   With plenty of talk about box jellyfish, whether they exist or not, at the popular beaches of Phuket in Thailand, here's a little reminder.  One way or another, they do. The Andaman Sea, with its environment affected by monsoon-driven seasonal currents, massive internal waves and tidal influences, can get rough. Box jellyfish are fragile and seek shelter to breed, mainly in coastal mangrove areas, meaning they tend to proliferate in more protected habitats, and as the seasons dictate. The western and southern coasts of Phuket between May and October are out of bounds for box jellyfish. Calmer waters mean more opportunity to feed and breed, though empirical evidence suggests they much prefer the year-round refuge of the east coast. Langkawi, Malaysia has long been a hotspot for tourists and box jellyfish, and once again, this high-risk combination proved to be a deathtrap. Sad news today from the notorious Pantai Chenang - where serious stings including fatalities have occurred with grim regularity - have surfaced of the tragic death of a two-year old boy. Holidaying with Russian parents Nikita and Olga  Iakubanets, Vladimir, who was affectionately known as Vova, died while the young family was enjoying a day at the beach.   Sad news from Sabah with a 7-year old girl succumbing to the deadly venom of a box jellyfish sting.  Little has been reported about the child or the incident, though it's said that she collapsed on the sand when coming out of shallow water, and a subsequent post mortem concluded that the " cause of death was jellyfish envenomation ". Her tragic death occurred at Pantai Sawangan in Kuala Penyu, south-west of Kota Kinabalu,  on Thursday 21 August, 2025. This region too commonly is the site of serious box jellyfish stings and fatalities.   Devastatingly, it's unlikely there were any warning signs or information posters or even treatment options such as vinegar available at this popular beach.   In very welcome and long-overdue news, Malaysia's The Star is reporting that researchers are in the process of identifying dangerous jellyfish species local to seas around Sabah. A first of its kind, this is a great initiative by a committed number of scientists that will shed light on a growing problem and hopefully lead to real and meaningful change.   Box jellyfish are learners, not thinkers, according to a recent study conducted by a team of German and Danish scientists. We know that box jellyfish are brainless and rely on a nervous system developed over millions of years to navigate and hunt their prey. It's a fact that box jellyfish have some kind of short-term memory, though it's unclear how long this learned behaviour lasts. In this case, a Caribbean species of box jellyfish, tripedalia cystophora which is also found in South-East Asia, was studied resulting in clear evidence they can learn to manoeuvre around obstacles to avoid a potentially damaging collision. Their number are small but they're a dedicated bunch committing themselves to surveilling, testing, researching, communicating, training, educating, treating and advancing the cause of effective box jellyfish prevention and sting treatment. Through interconnected active networks from the beach to the bureaucrats, change is taking place with  knowledge, strategies and actions progressively making a positive difference. Their message to the public is simple: Swim inside a prevention net if one's available. Wear a full-length lycra stinger suit if outside a net. Immediately and only use vinegar on a sting. And then there is peeing. Urinating on some poor victim's jellyfish sting is widely, and wrongly, considered an accepted treatment. It's not, okay? Box jellyfish are most probably, though officially unnamed, the species responsible for the death of a 5-year old French boy in Malaysia this week.   Sadly, the tragic news comes as no surprise with Malaysia still unwilling to create a network of awareness including effective prevention and treatment systems as its neighbour Thailand has done with considerable success. The boy was playing or wading in shallow water at Teluk Nipah beach on Pangkor Island with his family when he was struck by the jellyfish. He screamed in agony and was taken onto the sand where he lapsed into unconsciousness.
