A Craving For Chironex? Box Jellyfish Is On The Menu!

 


Hungry? Got a craving for something completely different? We are a serious bunch here on the blog. There's nothing funny about a box jellyfish sting, though as a creature they are fascinating, not sure about tasty, but certainly amazing. 

Our post describing the curious nature and habits of them does take a light-hearted look, and OK yes, we do sometimes lose ourselves in a somewhat over-inflated sense of humour to make a point or two. Here are a few examples:

We are only linking to these insane YouTube videos to boggle the mind and highlight what is clearly a bad idea. Having said that, perhaps, just perhaps, they are onto something.

Some species of jellyfish are indeed edible. We've never tried it so cannot judge on taste, texture, after-effects, etc. But, particularly in some parts of Asia, jellyfish are harvested in large numbers and served in homes and restaurants.

Apparently, jellyfish are low in calories and omega-3 and omega-6 fats, while rich in protein and collagen. Their flavour is meant to be very delicate, somewhat salty of course, though their appeal is more about their texture which is a bit like glass noodles.

The world has a huge jellyfish problem that's only getting worse, so maybe eating them is not as weird as it seems. 

The difference with box jellyfish is that they are venomous in the extreme and outright deadly. Their bell is probably much like other jellyfish and this is usually the part that is eaten. Eating their tentacles which are loaded with venom is beyond weird, it's crazy, and one must wonder what nutritional value they have, what happens in the digestive system and what is the resulting after-effect.

It appears as though the jellyfish eaters in these videos aren't concerned by the risk. They're too hungry. The practice has probably existed for generations and fed thousands, with perhaps only a few mishaps, eek. Anyway, without further ado, watch and wonder what the ...
